Experts-Exchange is a wonderful web-based computer support system. It is not free however and users are required to award points to people who supply answers to the questions. Bert uses Experts-Exchange quite frequently to help me w/ computer questions, and he even BOUGHT me a subscription a couple of years ago. Furthermore, Bert often researches E-E for members of the AC User Board.
I think where Bert is coming from is a very practical one and a personal one. It's very helpful for other members of the User Board to see the threads and learn from them. It's impossible to know if a particular solution worked without feedback however. Plus it's simply common courtesy to reply to the one who took time to answer the question. Maybe even give a simple "thank you." We are all adults, does this really need to be said? Of course we are all busy and most probably don't have time to give such feedback.
Bert suggested a few guidelines:
1. Try to give your complete layout of your system network. What OS, computers, topography, etc.
2. Stay involved in the question. Try to answer what the users are asking.
3. Let us know what steps you tried.
4. And, most importantly, let us know the outcome.
I hope this is helpful.
I would add only one, try not to hijack another users thread. I'm guilty of it too, so I'm not one to judge.
So please everyone, keep in mind these suggestions/guidelines. It's the best way to be helpful to your colleagues and fellow AC users, give your helper(s) a little feedback.
Happy AC'ing!
